Vest or Best? Korean's Missing V Sound
Korean doesn't have a v sound, so b often fills in for it — a small swap that can create real mix-ups in English.
Say 'vest' and 'best'. If they sound nearly identical in your English, you're likely using b for both, since Korean has no v sound to borrow from. The fix is about airflow, not just voicing: for v, your top teeth lightly touch your bottom lip and air squeezes through continuously, while for b, your lips fully close and then pop open. Try this: bite your bottom lip gently with your top teeth and blow air steadily — you should feel a light buzzy friction, not a full stop. Practice 'vest/best', 'van/ban', and 'vote/boat', checking your teeth-to-lip contact each time. Spend two minutes going slowly back and forth between the two mouth shapes, feeling the difference between a continuous buzz and a quick pop. Once your mouth learns this new shape, the two sounds will separate cleanly in real conversation.
